"In each individual life, there are patterns of thought, emotion response, and behavior.

There are factors which one can manipulate easily, and those that resist alteration. The art of self-mastery is understanding where the degrees of freedom lie, and the courage to imagine and experiment with change"

Therapy

The decision to go into therapy can be understood as an action.  A decision reflecting personal agency.  A decision toward growth and an investment in health.

Therapy is a personal commitment.  It is like a choice to intentionally take a trip. You may have a destination (or outcome) in mind, or perhaps you have a hoped for experience.

Regardless, of the reasoning behind your decision, the path will assist you in developing a deeper understanding about your growth points, your current skills, your priorities, the habits you wish to continue, and the ones you wish to leave or change.

There will be both hard work on this journey and deep reward for that work. You will not forget the trip, and it will be life-changing, quite literally, that is why you go.

There are also those times, where there is a condition or circumstance in life that takes you on a trip that you do not wish to go, but cannot avoid. Under those conditions, it is a bit more frightening because there are more unknown factors involved.

In that situation, there will be more front loaded education, and more initial work on bringing you back to a position of stability before the trip begins. Think of it as a supply list for the trip, items needed to sustain you on your journey.

Coaching

The following excerpt is taken from a recent interview where Dr. Courtney discusses her perspective on life coaching:

Q: What is the difference between Coaching and Therapy?

A: While both are problem solving approaches, Coaching is typically chosen when the obstacles you are addressing are a by-product of your current accomplishments.

Q: When is the right time to seek Coaching rather than continuing to meet challenges in the ways I always have?

A: To quote a thought leader in business, “We cannot become what we need to be remaining what we are.” A trained set of eyes can help distinguish between these two places, both of which we want to occupy.

Q: Are you a “Life Coach?”

A: We are all life coaches. The value of a coach is in preparing your mindset for the encounters to come, which you alone must face. Then, in those moments, you are your own coach. My job as your Coach is to help you clarify the mindset you are working with so we can establish and practice the manner in which you will execute your plan.

Q: What does optimization mean to you?

A: Optimization has two paths. One is about preparation and planning, where organizing the conflicting data takes place. The other is about trusting your skills and insights when they are in the heat of the moment. In a coaching setting we look to build a clear approach to both of these paths.

Q: I am responsible for leading a team yet I feel like my decisions are always disappointing someone. maybe I am not cut out to be a leader?

A: Leadership is hard, it doesn’t just happen because you achieved a leadership level role. There are always conflicting causes to consider and critics with strong opinions. Our confidence in ourselves can falter. We will work on where your competence, credibility, and courage overlap; these feed the domain of confidence, healthy striving, and internally derived success.

For Physicians

Through my role in graduate medical education, I have had the privilege of working intimately alongside residents, early career physicians, and experienced attendings.  This work—and my own experiences— have taught me about the hardships and unique challenges that exist in being an expert in need of care. You don’t have to carry that alone.

I am intimately familiar with the responsibilities physicians carry. I am fully aware of the frustrations that physicians experience as they navigate the “business” of healthcare while simultaneously prioritizing best practices for patient care. I know about the complexities involved in clinical decision-making, and I understand the consequences tied to decisions related to observe, act, and sometimes accept factors that are beyond human control. I have lived the challenges that physicians face to communicate those decisions to others.

I understand the impact of mistakes.

I have seen the impact on physicians firsthand. I have witnessed the impact on a physician’s role as–physician, and also on the many other roles physicians inhabit as people: mother, father, daughter, son, friend, spouse, and sometimes, patient.

I will bring these experiences to bear, in collaboration and concert with your own experiences, as we identify and craft a plan that is uniquely curated for your benefit.
